The impact of different preservation procedures, including formalin fixation, ethanol preservation, and freezing, on the morphometric traits of fish preserved in museum specimens is tested in three different cichlid species: Oreochromis aureus (Steindachner, 1864), Coptodon zillii (Gervais, 1848), and Oreochromis niloticus (Linnaeus, 1758). The primary goal was to determine morphometric differences resulting from these procedures and identify correction values to reconstruct the original dimensions of the body. Our results support that shrinkage of morphological variables, such as total length (TL), standard length (SL),and head length (HL), is present in the three methods tested, depending on species, measurement, and treatment. This shrinkage is also supported by a least-squares regression analysis showing that length loss increases proportionally with larger fish sizes for the species under study. These findings are important as they confirm the differences observed among preservatives in all species, supporting the argument against significant morphometric biases related to freezing, while suggesting that standardized protocols be used with fixatives. These findings not only offer directions for those working with fish collections but also highlight the need for thorough documentation of preservation methods, in order to help future taxonomical and ecological research in ichthyology
Two means used for saving fish samples, namely Freezing and Preservatives represented by Alcohol and Formalin. The Freezing was used in saving samples collected newly, in addition to use Alcohol and Formalin with different concentrations 70% of Alcohol and 10% of Formalin. The concentrations of some heavy metal elements were examined, such as Potassium, Phosphorus, Calcium, Manganese, Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, Copper and Boron in samples saved in Formalin and Alcohol and frozen at different durations. The concentration of some elements has been changed during the saving duration. The study was performed on the concentration of heavy elements in the Liza abu muscles of saved and frozen fish.
In this study, we try to deviate from the traditional methods of preserving fish. The research depends on finding alternative modern methods by which fish bodies can be preserved in a better way and for long periods after conducting some laboratory treatments on the specimens to ensure obtaining clean and clear samples suitable for diagnosis and study, in addition to keeping it in a new, lightweight and elegant form that can give three-dimensional shapes to the specimens. The final specimens were of high quality and unbreakable durability with high clarity and transparency and low manufacturing costs. This study is the first of its kind.
This study aims to formulate an alternative solution for Formalin for preserving fish as study specimens for long periods. The main reason for finding a solution instead of formalin is to get rid of the negative effects of this solution on those who work with it, as well as to better preserve the bodies of fish. Hence, three new solutions were proposed to replace formalin. Thus, Formalin, in turn, may enter the composition of a small part of these solutions to give better results and for long periods of keeping specimens. All solutions prepared in this study participated in being acidic as in formalin. Two solutions succeeded in compensating for the use of formalin in preserving fish
Microplastics in aquatic ecosystem has a cumulative effect on the environment, especially fish population, which is directly associated with human health. The impact on fish health differs among the neurological, digestive, and immune systems, as well as behavioral, circulatory, and antioxidant defense systems. This study aims to review previously published studies about the correlation between microplastics and physiological alteration in fish.
This study is concerned with a survey of seven species belonging to seven genera under two families and two orders found in some different areas of the Tigris River, especially since these areas have not been surveyed for a long time, and an attempt to identify the existing species at the present time after the recent water scarcity of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and all water bodies interior of Iraq and the impact of this scarcity on the fish diversity found in some areas of the Tigris River in Baghdad.
Objective: The present study aims to investigate molecular confirmation for Cryptosporidium species in fish handlers in Baghdad City, central Iraq. Materials and Methods: Sixty stool samples were collected between early November 2023 and late April 2024. All samples were examined phenotypically using a modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain and genotypically (nested polymerase chain reaction technique) based on a partial sequence of 18S rRNA genes with sequencing and phylogenetic tree analysis. Results: The total molecular results identified Cryptosporidium parvum with an infection rate of 45% (27/60). A higher infection rate of 51.9% (14/27) was found in the age group between 15 and 35 years, and male

Show MoreThe current study deals with estimating the protein concentration and the effect of fish weight on protein concentration values in red and white muscles in two different regions ( R1 : Anterior region lies 2 cm behind the head and R2: posterior region lies 2cm from caudal fin (in two types of bony fish, namely common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Samples were collected from Karmat Ali river- north of Basrah between October 2019 and February 2020. The protein was extracted using protein extraction buffer, the current study show that the average of protein concentration in red muscles of Nile tilapia ranged between 7.74-7.4 mg / ml and ( 6.8-8.85 mg / ml) in R1 and R2 region re

Fish are regarded as a crucial indicator of alterations in the aquatic environment due to their position at the apex of the food chain. Monitoring these alterations is crucial for identifying modifications in the aquatic ecosystem. The principal elements influencing fish health are temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, pesticide contamination, microplastics, and algal presence. These elements substantially influence fish health regarding development, reproduction, respiration, oxygen stress, and the internal enzymes associated with digesting and other metabolic functions. Alterations in global environmental conditions and anthropogenic pollutants result in modifications to fish populations, their lives, and their behavior and
