The present work is qualitative in nature. It aims to investigate the use of visual attention/persuasive strategies in both Iraqi Arabic and American English Facebook advertisements. To achieve the objective of the study, the researchers have selected (4) representative advertisements; (2) from Iraqi Arabic and (2) from American English. The data has been analyzed using Frame semantics theory by Fillmore (1995). Results have shown that textually, both languages invest almost an equal amount of persuasive techniques. The present research aims at: First, to examine the reasons behind using silence/pause-based unintentional incongruities in selected instances from the British Sitcom Mind Your Language; second, to explore specifically the types of silence/pause-based unintentional incongruities and the different facial gestures that accompany each of these types. To meet these two objectives, the analysis will be theoretically and conceptually-based, respectively. Conclusions, as far as the first objective is concerned, have shown that silence can be used to reflect: the sense of being inattentive; lack of understanding; being unfamiliar with what one hears; the time needed for thinking and associating, and the act of hiding one's nervousness, etc.

This study presents a linguistic analysis of how Russian and American mainstream media and official statements deployed speech acts of accusation during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.
